JOB SUMMARY

TVA is currently seeking a Real Time Power Trader, III. The ideal candidate is prepared to meet the following expectations:
* This position serves as TVA’s representative in the 24 x 7 real time power market, negotiating power exchanges in the physical, financial, bilateral and Location Marginal Priced markets with approved utilities and marketers.
* The position is responsible for evaluating, developing and executing the trading plan for the next hour through balance of the week. The trader must understand and anticipate power needs, availability, transmission requirements and constraints, and the optimal mix of resources in order to optimize TVA’s short term market portfolio.
* This position may require shift work to support operation of TVA’s power system.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Negotiates purchases/sales of power with other utilities and marketers to maximize return to TVA, minimize delivered cost of power and; 1) ensure the adequacy and reliability of power supply for the TVA power system and 2) balance the power supply for TVA’s bulk power marketing initiative.
* Integrates, evaluates and interprets data from Resource Market Operations, System Planning, Commodity Price Forecasting, Risk Management, Office of the General Counsel, Economic Analysis, and Corporate Credit;

Weather patterns, load forecast, hydro schedules, steam availability to determine power needs and available assets.

Financial gas and power markets to determine whether market prices are more economical than TVA’s resources.

Potential threats, unit outages, transmission constraints and available transmission/ flowgate capacity to determine the availability of reliable power for the TVA system.

* Using knowledge of energy trading interprets internal/external issues to develop trading strategy and best approaches with CO&P Analysts, Natural Gas Traders and Schedulers, and TRO system operators.
* Understand the inputs and outputs of various models to evaluate and execute trades within these parameters.
* Facilitates transmission purchases as well as planning and scheduling transmission in support of purchases and sales.
* Manages ongoing transactions to maximize benefits to TVA by employing appropriate actions, such as changing delivery criteria with respect to volume or price, or by laying off transaction risks by managing hedging methodologies such as physical or financial counter transactions to mitigate or eliminate the potential risk of transaction losses.
* Utilize the electronic trading and transaction management systems and provide input to market management process/methodologies.
* Knowledge of financial and physical power markets within Regional Transmission Organizations in order to actively trade these markets. Knowledge of the RTO operations, transmission availability and constraints, and associated market rules.
* Responsible for short term market price forecasting to various other TVA organizations.
* Develop Risk Mitigation Plans by evaluating and executing physical/ financial electricity contracts in the bilateral and RTO markets and evaluating transmission constraints and capacity.
* Maintain SARBOX control processes and compliance. Maintain and create Standard Programs and Processes (SPPs).
* Performs other functions, as necessary, to meet the objectives of the organization.
* Responsible for short term off-system sales

Requirements

* Bachelors degree in engineering or business related field or the equivalent experience in trading and marketing electric power. A Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in business, economics, or related area is desirable.
* May have 3-7 years of progressive work experience and a comprehensive background in marketing, business, financial, or system operations and an understanding of the engineering and system requirements of electric power systems including dispatch and transmission scheduling.
* NERC certification or equivalent is desirable.
* Must be able to create, evaluate, and structure the pricing and terms of sales, purchases, or brokering of power. Incumbent should have a thorough understanding of transmission, contracts, brokering, and financial instruments. A thorough knowledge of current developments in the infrastructure of the electric utility industry, and of strategies, products and methodologies is essential. Incumbent should have the ability to quickly establish and maintain effective working relationships with other utilities, traders, and marketers and respond to changing market conditions. Applicant must be aggressive, proactive, and persistent in closing deals.
